AKA Ikenga Slams Buhari For Arresting Director Of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu

Aka Ikenga Backs Radio Biafra, Warns FG Against Dictatorship By Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos  Igbo Think Tank, Aka Ikenga on Wednesday said the federal government should desist from acts capable of overheating the polity over the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, the Director of Radio Biafra. While throwing its weight behind the operation of the radio station, President of the group, Goddy Uwazurike in a chat with Daily Independent, said the federal government through its action wants to suppress freedom of information while hiding under the guise of fighting secession. He said it was the same path the late dictator, Sani Abacha threaded when he tried unsuccessfully to stop Radio Kudirat from operating in the days of NADECO political struggle against military dictatorship. According to Uwazurike “I think the federal government should draw a line between suppression of opinion and fighting what it perceived as secession. Freedom to hold views different from government’s own and freedom to disseminate such views and receive information are fundamental human rights”. ” In the world over, anyone arresting people for operating radio and news media has always ended up being the loser because the world is in favour of protection of Freedom of Information, and not its restriction”. “We therefore, are saying that the federal government is overheating the polity with the arrest of its Director, Nnamdi Kanu. In the South East, the major problem there is not Radio Biafra but preponderance of kidnappers and inability of the security agencies to curtail their activities”. ” We don’t see Radio Biafra as a threat to the peace, unity and security of Nigeria. Radio Kudirat operated here for years. The then government of late Sani Abacha went after them and we all condemned it. So, why won’t we condemn those going after Radio Biafra? Wole Soyinka was in charge of Radio Kudirat with Kayode Fayemi”. “So if today, Fayemi is a Minister in the government that is trying to suppress Radio Biafra, it just doesn’t make sense. We are saying they should let Radio Biafra be and stop the persecution of Nnamdi Kanu. It doesn’t make sense” he said. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/10/aka-ikenga-backs-radio-biafra-warns-fg-against-dictatorship/

CNN iReport: IPOB Nnamdi Kanu’s arrest – Nigeria’s Biggest Mistake

BACKGROUND The Eastern part of Nigeria is a made of predominantly Christian population whose way of life is different from their Northern Counterpart that are predominantly Muslims. These two groups of people existed on their own without the other part for thousands of years before the coming of the white men. There were amalgamated in 1914 by the then Governor of the Colonized Niger Area – Lord Frederick Luggard for the purpose of convenience of governance of the area. The amalgamation of the North and the South of the Niger-Area came into force and it was Flora Shaw that gave it the name Nigeria, coined from the word – NIGER + AREA.     After the flag independence of Nigeria in 1960, the crop of leaders that took over from the colonial masters in their effort to gain control of the Nation through undue influence gradually planted the seed of nepotism, hatred, and ethnic division among the worst of all, corruption that has continued to cripple Nigeria to date.     Over time, the notion that the Ibos were domineering people gradually degenerated into hatred that caused the massacre of the Easterners in the North in an effort to curb their presumed influence and abilities as they were the most educated and versatile of the people of Nigeria. The unending massacre resulting from greed and nepotism caused the then Governor of Eastern Nigeria – Cornel Odumegwu Ojukwu to declare a Republic of Biafra in 1967. The declaration brought a civil war when the Nigeria government under Gen.Yakubu Gowan tried to force the Biafrans back into Nigeria, The war lasted for 3years from 1967 to 1970 before the Biafrans surrendered as a result of starvation ochestrated by against Biafrans though total blocked of every rout that food may be brought into Biafra land. Over 1.5million children and women perished as a result of using hunger as a weapon of warfare for the first time in the world, introduced by Pa Awolowo, the first Nigerian Minister of finance and economy under a military head of state.     MANY YEARS LATER In order to appeal to the ego of the proud Biafrans, the war was declared no victor and no vanquished, but the actions that followed proved otherwise. The Biafrans to date lost all their property all over Nigeria, even in their homelands and they were subjected to undue treatment of receiving 20pound in exchange of any amount you must have saved in the bank before the war. It forced them to resign to fate and their only way out became to join one trade or the other and willing out their children as servants. But over the years, they succeeded and became the most popular businessmen in Nigeria.     TODAY As a result of the flight from Biafra land occasioned by lack of work and conducive livelihood on Biafra lands as a result of government policies which include making it impossible for Biafrans to run any company that can employ up to 100 workers, impossible to import their goods through their closest seaport some 10kilometers to them and instead have to import through Lagos about 800kilomiters away and paying through en-rout to the numerous Nigeria uniformed officials back to their land. These numerous ill treatment caused the rise of some opposition to Nigeria from this area. The first of its kind was from the Niger Delta area by Ken Saro Wiwa and his kinsmen from Ogoni, but they were all hanged by the Nigerian government under IBB, Then the Niger Delta boys went militancy to protest the oil spillage that was destroying their lands to date and the government of late Yaradua got wise and gave them amnesty. Other such groups are THE MEND, MASSOB and presently IPOB that is controlled by Nnamdi Kanu.     While the other groups seem to have come only to get money from the federal government, the IPOB has proved to be on a more serious mission to secede from Nigeria. Using Radio Broadcast and very advanced technology to reach the world without control from Nigeria, IPOB has managed to cause a serious nightmare to the Nigerian government.     Nigerian government seriously tried but failed to block the signal of the radio playing into Nigeria, mostly the Eastern part of Nigeria, they resorted to the only method associated with “Black People” force.     NNADI KANU Sets a trap, Nigeria falls headlong into it. “How could Nigerian Government be so insensitive to fail to decode that Nnamdi Kanu intentionally came down from United Kingdom to be arrested and they played into the trick? He is an educated man who calculates all his moves. Nigeria will never remain the same again after this arrest because this arrest has given more publicity to the Biafran cause than the Biafrans and even their leader Nnamdi Kanu would have dreamed. Now that Amnesty International has talked about it, New York Times and all the News Papers in Nigeria have carried it from the arrest to the bail. I think that is all Nnamdi Kanu needed to go to the next level of the struggles. http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-1277803

NEW YORK TIMES Today: Nigerian Intelligence Arrests Biafran Separatist Leader

WARRI, Nigeria — Nigerian intelligence agents have arrested a broadcaster calling for the peaceful secession of the southeast from Nigeria, according to two Biafra separatist groups whose cause prompted a civil war in the 1960s that killed an estimated 1 million people.  Radio Biafra director Nnamdi Kanu was detained Saturday as he was about to fly to London from Lagos, Nigeria's biggest city, said the Indigenous People of Biafra and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra.  It was not immediately possible to get comment from the Department of State Security.  In July, President Muhammadu Buhari's government said it had jammed Radio Biafra's signal because it is unlicensed but the station is still able to broadcast, airing grievances of the Igbo people. The Igbos fought a civil war to form an independent nation called Biafra in the late 1960s that killed about 1 million people, mostly Igbos from conflict-induced famine.  Unresolved issues from the war including appropriated property that has not been returned remain sore points. Groups including Radio Biafra continue to claim the tribe is discriminated against and they agitate for independence. Many Igbos who fled into exile have not returned home.  Eleven pro-Biafra activists have been in detention since last year on charges of alleged treason, which is a capital offense in this West African nation.   Nigeria is fighting an Islamic uprising in the northeast that has killed 20,000 people in six years, resurging militancy in the southern oil-rich Niger Delta and the central Middle Belt is plagued by violent confrontations over land and water between mainly Muslim nomadic cattle herders and sedentary farmers who are mostly Christians.  ___  This story was corrected to show that the Biafran civil war was in the 1960s. http://mobile.nytimes.com/aponline/2015/10/19/world/africa/ap-af-nigeria-separatist-arrested.html?_r=0&referer=

Many Twitter users in Nigeria are talking about #NnamdiKanu, the director of Radio Biafra, operated by people sympathetic to the campaign to create the breakaway state of Biafra.  A pro-Biafra group says Mr Kanu was arrested by Nigeria's secret police on Saturday, Vanguard newspaper reports.  In July, Nigerian authorities banned the station and jammed its signal.  Pro-secessionists in the south-east declared Biafra an independent state in 1967, but the military defeated them after a three-year civil war which claimed more than one million lives.    twitter: https://twitter.com/jokechukwuemek1/status/656071574743883776

Port Harcourt Airport In Biafra Land ‘worst in the world’ – Survey https://t.co/Twm0JbJoxI @vanguardngr.com

Annually, SleepingInAirports, an internationally respected travel website conducts a survey asking travellers to rate their airport experiences based on the services and facilities available within the terminal, cleanliness, customer service, comfort and their overall airport experience. After conducting its survey, worldwide, it said there were a lot of airports that didn’t quite make the grade. Those that top its charts for worst airports in the world collected the most negative feedback from voters over the past year. These airports fall flat in terms of providing any kind of enjoyable overall airport experience. It said “instead, they’re dirty, uncomfortable, unfriendly and lack the most basic of services and amenities. They elicit passionate critiques from those who visit them, and countless warnings for future travellers to avoid these places at all costs.” However, in its 2015 Airport Survey, the travel website reported that while Changi International Airport, Singapore, was named the best, the Port Harcourt International Airport, in Rivers State, Nigeria was named the worst international airport. http://linkis.com/www.vanguardngr.com/3YmCW

Buhari The Lying President – Daily Times

Buhari the lying President – Daily Times  Buhari and assets declaration fraud By: Lawrence Chinedu Nwobu  Buhari-laughs.jpg  As the days go by, President Muhammadu Buhari is turning out to be the most deceptive leader in Nigeria’s history. Almost everything he said in the course of the campaign has turned out to be lies, while some others like his most prominent campaign manifesto “my 100 days covenant with Nigerians” has been roundly denied by his spokesmen and party chairman. The document detailed his pledge and the first steps and initiatives to be taken in such cases as corruption, insurgency and insecurity, Niger-Delta, Diversity, Health care, Education, Agriculture, Economy, Power, Youth and ICT development. The document laid out the chief thrusts of his administration and the benchmarks it set out to achieve within a 100 days. While the document is loaded with hypes, as was characteristic of the APC campaign, in the area of insurgency it specifically promised to rescue the Chibok girls within the 100-day timeline. As would be expected, this document was widely circulated in the print, electronic and social media and formed part of the most fundamental drive of the Buhari/APC campaign. Curiously, Buhari never denied nor disowned the document that he purportedly signed as it went viral, but fast forward to September 2015 just as the 100 day timeline was about to be reached and all of a sudden a flurry of denials is coming from the presidency and the party. Buhari now claims he never saw nor authorised the document, that some out of control APC apparatchiks were behind the document.  How strange? Buhari went to rallies where posters of the same manifestoes were emblazoned on, walls and vehicles, he read newspapers were headlines screamed with his 100 days covenant, he watched television programmes where APC leaders serialised the covenant and in all that period Buhari kept quiet only to now tell us he was never aware of those campaign promises. How about the assets he hurriedly declared after public opinion began mounting against him. We recall that Buhari had also previously denied promising to publicly declare his assets, a promise that was included in the 100 days covenant. As the upsurge of negative opinion began, he made an asset declaration that was purely as deceitful as it was a propaganda document. Again not only did the assets contain a lot of semantics intended to hoodwink the gullible it was filled with inconsistencies that starkly contrasts with what Buhari had previously said with regards to his assets. During the presidential campaign, Buhari had said barely had one million naira was in his account and had to borrow money from his bank to buy the presidential nomination form. Few months later, we learn there is close to N30 million in his account, Buhari had also said he owned only two houses, one in his hometown of Daura and another in Kaduna. His landlord had reportedly kicked him out of an apartment in Abuja because he could not afford to pay the rent. Now we learn that Buhari has five houses including one in Abuja of all places. When these are added to the acres of land in Port Harcourt that was previously not disclosed, the humongous shares in three banks that were also never disclosed and the number of cows that have jumped from 150 before the campaign to 270 and his inability to tell us how many vehicles he actually owns because they are too many, you get the full picture of a deceptive 419 President. While Buhari has tried to deceptively push his cash stock of 30 million in our face, his total assets when his property in Abuja, acres of land in Port Harcourt, 270 cows and millions of shares in banks are factored in are possibly more than N1billion. This does not include other possibly hidden or diverted assets we might never know of, including those in the name of his wife, relations, in-laws and siblings. Essentially, Buhari is a manipulative smooth operator. From his certificate scandal all through to the presidency, he has laid his way to power, pulling off the most elaborate fraud in Nigeria’s history. He used the campaign promises and a carefully cultivated image of honesty and probity to deceive Nigerians while bidding for time. As soon as he got the presidency, he started unmasking, not intending to fulfill any of his campaign promises he went on a denial binge. Buhari not only deceived Nigerians, he also deceived the enablers who made his presidency possible. Bola Tinubu and the party henchmen are already licking their wounds having been ostracised by Buhari who used and dumped them. We have been conned and duped. Brace up for the bumpy ride that is sure to come with it.  – Daily Times. http://www.infomantnews.com/buhari-the-lying-president-daily-times/

The Leader Of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu Has Been Arrested By Nigeria DSS

The news about the arrest of of the Leader of Indigenous People Of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu did not come as surprise to many as it has been long awaited. In freedom fighting one cannot  rule out such cases  as many successful freedom fighters had years of dinner with mosquitoes behind bars. Nelson Mandela of the blessed memory was imprisoned for over 20 years and people that believed in his ideology for a free South Africa remain resolute to the struggle. Martin Luther King Jr of United States of America had to pay the supreme price in quest for the freedom of Black race in America.   Today, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is faced with such unfortunate but necessary challenge that wrote the names of Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr in Gold. It is important for everybody that want freedom to know that Freedom is not given but taken. The arrest of the leader of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB)  is a sign that Biafra restoration is close. Biafrans must remain steadfast towards the restoration of Kingdom of God on Earth.

PDP Changes Name, Find Out The Reason Behind It

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on October 15, Thursday, to consider the report of the Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s post-election review committee.  The meeting was the first since the party lost the March 28 presidential poll to the now ruling All Progressives Congress.  It seems that the defeat in the elections also affected the opposition rationally so much so that they made a blunder on a banner hanging on the wall upon.  READ ALSO: Chairmanship Battle: PDP NEC Meeting Might Be Chaotic  It was written Peoples Democracy Party. PDP NAME  A banner with a mistake was hanging during the NEC meeting of the PDP.  Their lost in the elections supposedly made them so broke, that was evident in the fact that the PDP couldn’t pay workers and contractors their outstanding wages and the use of such shoddy banner for such an important occasion.https://www.naij.com/606453-pdp-broke-changes-partys-name-photo.html

EFCC Arrests Ex-Governor Akpabio Over Alleged Multi-billion Naira Fraud

A former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and incumbent Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, was on Friday arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.  PREMIUM TIMES investigation shows that Mr. Akpabio was taken in by EFCC operatives at about 5.20 pm.  He was said to have been accompanied a few aides and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Ricky Tarfa.  An aide to the former governor, who cannot be named because he is not authorised to speak on the matter told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Akpabio is currently being interrogated by top officials of the EFCC.  An EFCC source confirmed the development.  “He was brought in at about 5.20 pm accompanied by a few aides and Mr. Rickey Tarfa,” the source said.  “It is not yet known whether he will be allowed to go this night. It depends on how the interrogation goes.”  The spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, did not answer or return calls seeking comment for this story.  The EFCC had begun investigation into alleged theft of N108.1billion of Akwa Ibom funds by the former governor in June.  The action followed a petition forwarded to the commission by an Abuja-based lawyer and activist, Leo Ekpenyong.  Mr. Ekpenyong had on June 8 petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the EFCC, calling for Mr. Akpabio’s probe and accusing him of looting Akwa Ibom state treasury.  Investigations by PREMIUM TIMES showed that several other indigenes of the state who are demanding the investigation of the former governor, have been invited by the EFCC to adopt their petitions.  On his part, Mr. Ekpenyong was summoned on Wednesday, June 17, to adopt his petition and provide more details to some of the allegations he made against Mr. Akpabio.  The former governor, now senator, was elected in 2007, at a time the nation enjoyed robust oil revenue.  Akwa Ibom and Rivers States are Nigeria’s largest oil-producing states. The two states alternate as first and second top producers periodically.  The two states receive the highest funds allocation from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee, FAAC, monthly.  Data from the National Bureau of Statistics and the office of the Accountant General of the Federation indicate that under Mr. Akpabio, known for ostentatious spending, Akwa Ibom received a staggering N1. 6 trillion from FAAC between June 2007 and May 2014.  At the time he vacated office on May 29, the state received more, excluding other revenues like Ecological Funds, internally generated revenue etc.  In a new petition to the EFCC dated June 22, and copied to Mr. Buhari and the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, Mr. Ekpenyong gave details of some of Mr. Akpabio’s alleged financial recklessness.  He alleged that between January and December 2014, the ex-governor colluded with two of his top aides to steal a whopping N108.1 billion from the state’s treasury.  Mr. Ekpenyong told the EFCC that the former Government House Permanent Secretary, Etekamba Umoren, and the former Accountant General of the state, Udo Isobara, colluded with Mr. Akpabio to steal the funds.  “Between January –December 2014, it is on record that the trio of Godswill Akpabio, Mr. Etekamba Umoren and Mr. Udo Isobara, made illegal but substantial withdrawals of cash from a designated state government-owned account with Zenith Bank with account number: 1010375881 amounting to N22.1 billion,” he stated in the petition.  “It is worthy of note that reasons for such ungodly cash withdrawals against financial regulations and due process laws range between sundry use and unjustifiable expenditures by Godswill Akpabio and his numerous surrogates and proxies.  “For example, a whopping N18 billion was withdrawn fraudulently from the state FAAC account with the United Bank for Africa in trenches of N10 million and above by Mr. Isobara in a surreptitious manner to conceal their dishonest intention.”  For assisting Mr. Akpabio retire billions of the stolen funds, Mr. Ekpenyong said Mr. Umoren was rewarded with an appointment as Government House chief of staff and now secretary to the state government under Udom Emmanuel’s administration.  The legal practitioner went on to state that over N50 billion of Akwa Ibom funds were spent by the former governor during the last general elections.  During the period under review, he said Mr. Akpabio also withdrew a whopping N18 billion from the state coffers under the guise of special services, reception of very important guests and sundry items.  “The cumulative aggregate of these monies stolen by Godswill Akpabio from the coffers of government as pocket money is the annual budget of some states in Nigeria put together,” the petition reads.  He listed the bouquet of assets acquired by the former governor through surrogates to include a multi-billion naira mansion at Plot 5 Okogosi Spring Close, off Katsina-Ala Crescent, Maitama-Abuja, a multi-billion naira mansionette at Plot 28 Colorado Close, Maitama, Abuja and another multi-billion naira mansion at 22 Probyn Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.  Others include a multi-billion naira mansionette at Plot 23 Olusegun Aina Street, Parkview, Lagos and a multi-billion naira 25 storey building at Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.  “As earlier promised, more details of assets and graft-related funds illegally and fraudulently siphoned from Akwa Ibom State treasury and laundered to foreign destinations are in the offing. As usual, we will do the needful.  An EFCC source said senior officials of the commission held discussions with Mr. Ekpenyong on the petition on Tuesday.  “He also adopted the petition he forwarded to the commission and provided additional details about the alleged stealing of funds by the former governor,” the source said.  The source noted that many of those who have sent petitions to the commission against the former governor, now senator, have already been invited to adopt their document.  He confirmed that very soon the commission would invite the former governor for questioning.  Allegations, complete falsehood  Mr. Akpabio could not be reached for this story. Messrs Umoren and Isobara could not also be reached for comments.  But the commissioner of information during the administration of Mr. Akpabio, Aniekan Umana, described the contents of the petition by Mr. Ekpenyong as falsehood taken too far.  He said the petition betrayed a lack of understanding of the workings of government.  “Every sum withdrawn from a government account is tied to a subhead and there must be a budgetary provision. To attribute fraud to withdrawals which had the full sanction of Government and was accommodated in the budget is strange, mischievous and untenable. More so, when one understands that there are checks and balances which guide all aspects of government financial administration,” he said.  He also said the allegation that the State Government spent N50 billion on the March General Elections falls flat on its face based on his explanations of the workings of government as regards financial transactions.  “There was no such provision in the budget of this year and such an amount could not have been paid as an extra-budgetary expenditure and yet salaries and other commitments were met. We challenge the petitioners to provide proof to support this wild allegation. Who was it paid to? How was it paid? Where was it paid? And when was it paid?  “Senator Akpabio does not own a 25-storey building in Victoria Island or in any part of the world, as alleged by the petitioner. It is also a patent falsehood that the house at 22 Probyn Road, Ikoyi belongs to Senator Akpabio.  It is a rented building which ownership can be verified from Lagos State Lands Registry.  “Senator Akpabio does not own the properties mentioned in the petition to belong to him. You can verify the ownership of the properties (5 Okokosi Close, Maitama and Plot 28 Colorado Close, Maitama) from the land registry in Abuja,” he said.  He also denied the state received over N2 trillion as oil allocation.  “Please do note that the idea that the Akwa Ibom State Government received over N2.5 trillion in the eight years of the Akpabio administration is an outrageous lie. What this suggests is that the State Government received an average of N26 billion monthly for the period. What a lie! From published accounts of disbursement from the Federation Accounts, Akwa Ibom State never received up to N26 billion in any month throughout the period.  Note that in some months like the April and May, 2015, Akwa Ibom State received about N8 billion. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/191620-efcc-arrests-former-akwa-ibom-governor-godswill-akpabio.html

Ransome-Kuti Sentenced To Six Months In Jail By Nigerian Army Court

Brigadier General Enitan Ransome-Kuti, the son of the late human rights activist, Beko Ransome Kuti, has been sentenced to six months in prison for offenses committed during the war against Boko Haram.   Brigadier -General Enitan Ransome-Kuti  He will be dismissed from the Army if the sentence pronounced on him by a military court in Abuja on Thursday is confirmed by the Nigerian Army.  Brigadier General Kuti has been at the center of controversy relating to his conduct as an officer. He was accused of failing to perform his military duties during the fight against Boko Haram which may have resulted in the militants’ capture of Baga, the center of a multinational force.  Included in the charges against him is that Brigadier General Kuti failed to account for the weapons and ammunitions under his supervision, rendering the army useless in the fight against Boko Haram.  The officer denied all the charges. During a long trial, his lawyer, Femi Falana, presented evidence to the court that the Nigerian army had simply failed to provide necessary equipment for the Brigadier General to perform his lawful duties.  Falana also presented several statements from officers and soldiers who repeatedly stated that the army was ill-equipped to fight Boko Haram, an assertion that was later affirmed by a former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, shortly after he was fired from that position earlier this year. http://saharareporters.com/2015/10/15/nigeria-army-court-martial-sentences-brigadier-general-ransome-kuti-six-months-jail

Missing $20 billion’: Nigerian Senate clears Alison-Madueke, says no money missing

The Senate committee says suspended CBN Governor Sanusi lied  The Nigerian Senate has rejected claims by the suspended governor of the Central Bank, Lamido Sanusi, that at least $20 billion (N3.2 trillion) in oil receipts were not paid into the government treasury by state oil company, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.  The Senate’s finance committee, which probed the allegation, said Wednesday it found no evidence indicating that the huge sum was diverted or stolen, and described Mr. Sanusi’s claim as “incorrect” and “misleading”.  “There was never any unremitted $49.8 billion,” the committee headed by Ahmed Makarfi, said. The report will be discussed on a later date by the entire Senate.  In a leaked memo to President Goodluck Jonathan September 2013, Mr. Sanusi said the Central Bank had found out that as much as $49.8 billion oil receipts had been cornered by state officials.  He later admitted the figure was less, but said it would not be less than $20 billion. The federal government denied funds were missing.  But the government admitted it could not account for $10.8 billion. A meeting between the CBN, finance ministry, petroleum ministry and other officials, failed to reconcile that figure.  Mr. Sanusi was later removed from office by President Jonathan in February, accused of “financial recklessness”, in a move many saw as the government’s victimization of a daring whistle-blower.  Under intense pressure, the government announced it was commissioning an independent forensic audit of the NNPC, a government agency that constantly comes under allegations of graft- many of them investigated.  Despite ordering audit firm, PriceWatersCooper, to carry out the probe, the government has insisted no funds were missing. In a recent televised interview, Mr. Jonathan said if such an amount, nearly the size of Nigeria’s entire budget, was missing, the United States of America, would have known.  The Senate conducted a series on hearings between January and March, to trace the funds.  While the government failed to account for the outstanding $10.8 billion for days, leading to repeated reschedule of the Senate hearing, the NNPC and the petroleum ministry later claimed the money formed part of subsidy payment for petrol and kerosene, and cost for oil pipeline maintenance.  Documents backing those claims took weeks to surface, prompting the finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who could not vouch for them, to call for a forensic audit.  The outcome of the audit is expected in two months, the minister said recently.  But the Senate committee said Wednesday its own findings proved that Mr. Sanusi’s claims were misleading.  The committee accepted altogether the explanations of the NNPC and the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, saying it could not establish how the figure of US$49.8 billion was arrived at in the first instance.  The lawmakers criticised Mr. Sanusi’s varying figures as showing that his claim was “misleading” and “incorrect”. The committee also called for the scrapping of fuel subsidy. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/161646-missing-20-billion-nigerian-senate-clears-alison-madueke-says-money-missing.html

Falae's Abduction: Confusion as Police, DSS Parade Two Sets of Suspects

The long inter-agency rivalry between the two major security outfits in the country – the Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Services (DSS) – was brought to the fore again yesterday as barely 24 hours after the DSS paraded two suspects in connection with the abduction of the elder statesman, Chief Olu Falae, the police yesterday said they had five suspects in their custody.   Falae, a former presidential candidate, was kidnapped by armed men who stormed his farm last September 21, 2015. He was released three days later after his family parted with a ransom of N5 million.   The DSS on Monday paraded two suspects, Babawuro Kato and Abdullahi Usman, who claimed that the abduction of Falae was carried out by a three-man gang, adding however that the mastermind, one Dantito, escaped with the N5 million ransom collected from Falae’s relatives.   Abubakar Garba, who addressed the press on behalf of the DSS, said two of the abductors were arrested by the department’s operatives on October 15 at J. Zebra Hotel along Ganaja Road in Lokoja, Kogi State.   But the Inspector General of Police (IG) Solomon Arase, during the monthly meeting of top police officers at the force headquarters in Abuja yesterday, said the police apprehended five of the eight-man gang which abducted the elder statesman.   He named the suspects to include Abubakar Auta, Idris Lawan, Umar Ibrahim, Masahudu Mohammed and Bello Tanu whom he said operated a statewide kidnapping ring.   The suspects, the IG added, were arrested at their hideouts in Niger, Ekiti and Ondo States respectively. According to the police boss, items recovered from them included the Bajaj motorcycle used to transport their victim and N823,990 cash which was part of the N5 million ransom paid to them.   “All the arrested suspects have made confessional statements highlighting details of the operations and their individual roles. As I address you now, the suspects are being charged to court in Akure, Ondo State,” Arase stated.   When asked if the suspects paraded by the DSS were part of the kidnap gang arrested by the police, Arase stated that he had requested the transfer of the two suspects from the Director-General of the DSS.   He said: “I said there was an eight-man gang and from the investigations we have carried out so far, those two that were paraded yesterday (Monday) by the State Security Service were part of that eight-man gang. “I have written a letter to the DG, SSS that we are arraigning the suspects and once they bring the two suspects, we can amend the charge."   Arase also said police have arrested two masterminds of the blasts at Nyanya and Kuje, two satellite towns in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that killed 20 people and injured scores of others on October 2.   The IG also stated that the police foiled another plot by the suspects, Abdulazeez Muhazab, 27, and Isiaka Salihu, 25, to carry out another bomb attack in the FCT.   According to him, the police recovered 12 primed home made explosives concealed in Fayrouz soft drink cans, 28 pieces of electric detonators and huge quantities of explosive materials.   He said the police were collaborating with other security agencies to ensure public safety and called for the cooperation of all segments of the public.   Arase stated that the conference was convened to strengthen professional interaction and encourage an in-house peer review mechanism as a strategy towards sharpening the ability of strategic police managers in the discharge of their “complex and challenging statutory mandate”.   He stated that the conference would also review police preparations for the governorship elections scheduled for November 21 in Kogi State and December 5 in Bayelsa State. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/falaes-abduction-confusion-as-police-dss-parade-two-sets-of-suspects/222714/

Ameachi Runs Into Traffic In The Senate As They Failed To Screen Him

MINISTERIAL SCREENING: You Wont Believe What Happened To Amaechi Today At The Ministerial Screening

THE Senate,Tuesday, failed to screen the former governor of Rivers State,Rotimi Amaechi along other first batch of ministerial nominees.

The screening of the former Director General of Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation was deferred till Wednesday.

The inability of the Senate to screen Amaechi was due to the inability of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petition to submit report of clearance on after his appearance before the committee on Monday.

Amaechi appeared before the committee the previous day to defend himself following petitions of alleged corrupt acts against him by some groups from his state.

However, the committee cleared another nominee,Mrs Amina Ibrahim, who was equally petitioned against by some persons from Kaduna State on allegation that she was not an indigene of the State.

Chairman of the ethics committee,Senator Chris Anyanwu, explained that Mrs Ibrahim was cleared given that the petition against her was on the basis that she was nominated from Kaduna State when she was actually an indigene of Gombe State.

He said the committee found out that she was nominated from Gombe and not from Kaduna State, contrary to the petition, which insinuated that she was nominated to represent Kaduna State.http://naijchronicles.com/?p=421
